About 20,000 healthcare workers in the US are exposed to bloodborne pathogens on the job every year. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) made the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to protect workers from being exposed to bloodborne pathogens at work. Vaccines are available for HBV that can help prevent infection. While the number of new HIV infections has declined in recent years, the number of new cases of HBV and HCV infections has increased.
